PPARC Advanced Summer School in Magnetosphere - Ionosphere - Thermosphere Physics

The course will provide advanced training in the field of solar-terrestrial physics to 2nd and 3rd year PPARC postgraduate students, and PDRAs having already some initial work in the field. As well as attending lectures, participants will have the opportunity to present their research to their peers.

The programme will include lectures on:

  • Introduction to the Solar-Terrestrial system
  • Plasma waves in the MST system
  • Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory
  • Magnetic reconnection
  • Solar wind-magnetosphere coupling
  • Storms and substorms
  • The Magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system
  • Magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere coupling
  • The polar and auroral ionised atmosphere
  • Thermosphere-mesosphere coupling: particles
  • Thermosphere-mesosphere coupling: waves
  • Planetary atmospheres
  • Complexity in STP

The course is available for up to 20 participants. Financial support is available for PPARC students.
